How It Works

How does laser tattoo removal actualy work?

Laser tattoo removal is a powerful tool for removing undesired ink from the skin. A qualified operator uses a strong laser unit to target the tattoo’s pigmented parts during the operation. The laser produces brief bursts of strong light that are absorbed by tattoo pigment particles. Because of this absorption, the ink is broken down into smaller bits that the body’s immune system can naturally reject over time. The procedure is precise, with the laser affecting only the tattooed region and leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. Multiple sessions are normally required to remove a tattoo completely, but with each treatment, the tattoo fades away gradually, leaving the skin cleaner and unmarked.

Does it hurt?

Short energy bursts from the tattoo removal laser can be a little uncomfortable.  The discomfort is unlikely to be any worse than getting the tattoo in the first place and is often described as being flicked by elastic bands.

Before any treatment programme, an initial skin test patch will be carried out at our consultation.  This test will determine whether the laser and your body will respond favourably to the treatment.  This must be done at least a week before the start of the treatment.  Subject to the results showing no adverse reactions, your tattoo removal programme can commence.

How long does it take?

This depends on the desired result. Fewer sessions will be needed if the tattoo is only to be faded to allow for a cover up design.  The number of sessions required will also depend on the size, colour & style of the tattoo.

Professional tattoos might vary significantly and require 8-14 sessions, while an amateur tattoo can often be fully removed in only a few sessions.

Sessions are often 20-45 minutes these aspects will all be discussed at the initial consultation leaving you confident with your expectations when planning & arranging your treatment programme.

How should I look after my skin during the healing process?

Craig's unique background as a trained clinician means clients receive the highest standards, advice & care during your treatment programme.  If you have any questions Craig is only an email away.

For 48 hours, refrain from applying any scented products to your skin & always use a good antibacterial soap.

What are the side effects of tattoo removal?

As long as the procedure is carried out by a qualified specialist like Craig, using suitable professioanl equipment, laser tattoo removal is highly safe.  The treated region may feel warm during the treatment and likely red or swollen post session.

For the first two weeks following treatment, sheild your skin from the sun & wear sunscreen on the treated area for six weeks. Aloe gels are often soothing and with thick black tattoos you may expect a crusting/scab of the treated area as the tattoo is broken down.
